Poem of 2024

poet Anonymous

But he woke in the morn
with a smile on his face,
and the world seemed like
a wonderful place,
and vanished was all weight.

So he sprang out of bed,
without any cares,
and joy in his heart
he danced down the stairs
to ask Nurse Clara out on a date.

It was a miracle really
as he forgot to use his wheelchair
so he tumbled down the stairs
and hurt his head
Nurse Clara he whispered
and faded into unconsciousness

poet Anonymous

Six months later
his eyes opened wide,
to find Nurse Clara
there by his side.
'I love you, Fred,'
Nurse Clara said,
'And I've cared for you
while you've lain here in bed.
Let's get married,
live together in bliss.'

Then she wrapped her arms round him
and gave him a kiss.

the small wedding at Fred's home was attended by friends and neighbours
but Fred's three estranged daughters didn't attend
Nor did nurse Clara 's three sons
they all thought that old people
getting married was an abomination

poet Anonymous

The wedding reception of Clara and Fred
had an atmosphere as heavy as lead –
their children had all stayed away;
then into that mournful gloomy place
came the laughing duo, ajay and Grace,
and brightened up everyone's day.

Well, Grace gave Clara a great big hug
and ajay danced a jig on a rug
and the wedding soon went with a swing;
and Grace grooved too, with a laughing Fred,
and raising her arms up over her head
she whirled in a Highland Fling.

Grace got rather drunk on elderberry wine
she stumbled over a chair and bump her head
Fred laughed so hard he almost lost his denture
he bent over and helped Grace to her feet

Clara thought everyone needed hot food
and cooked mushroom chicken soup
Ajay brought out a loaf of bread
with spinach artichoke dip

their fare was simple but filling

poet Anonymous

Then the night grew late
as time moved on,
and the guests all thought
it was time to be gone,
for Clara clearly
was looking at Fred
with lust in her eyes
and thoughts of bed!

So ajay and Grace
walked out of the door,
but the night was young
and they wanted more,
so they went to the cinema
to take in a movie.
It was 'Casablanca'
and they thought it was groovy.

Grace thought of home and hearth
she needed to go home and wipe her face
she smelled of smoke, wine and cinema farts
her stocking had runs, and so did she

Ajay hailed a taxi to go home
waving his hand saying goodbye
he tipped his hat ever the gentleman
'lets go to the beach tomorrow, Grace,' he called and the taxi disappeared into the twilight gloom

poet Anonymous

The following day
was sunny and bright
and the beach was bathed
in a warm gold light
as ajay and Gracie
strolled on the sand,
eating the peaches
they held in their hand.

Sailboats were sailing
out on the sea,
and Grace said,
'They look delightful to me!
Come on, ajay!
Let's go for a sail!
We may see a dolphin
or even a whale!'

So ajay and Gracie
soon found a boat
and in next to no time
they were off and afloat,
splicing their mainbrace,
adjusting their sail,
hoping they didn't
crash into that whale.

Soon they were well
out of sight of the land,
no more could they see
that warm golden sand,
and everywhere round them
was sparkling sea
and never they'd felt
so happy and free.

the day was warm
the sea was vast
in the horizon
sea met sky

the waves were gentle
the breeze soothing
and  dolphins swam by
theres harmony

In nature's lullaby

poet Anonymous

'This is the life!'
said ajay to Grace,
reclining on deck
with a smile on his face.

'It certainly is,'
said Gracie to ajay,
'I think we should stay
on the sea here all day.'

Then a rubbery
suckered sudden arm
caused ajay and Grace
a bit of alarm

as an Octopus
heaved itself into the boat,
the same shade of green
as a US banknote.

'Don't be afraid,'
the Octopus said,
'of my green and rubbery
octopus head.

I've come to ask you
to dine with me
in my Octopus Garden
on the bed of the sea.'

'What a fab idea!'

Grace and ajay replied
as hand-in-hand
they dived over the side

and together they swam
to the bed of the sea
and accepted that
Octopus invite to tea. ☕🍰

Grace was overwhelmed by the beauty
of the garden of corals and reefs
colours of all imagination underwater
can I breathe in here, she thought
clinging to a slimy tentacle
don't worry Grace, Ajay said
with a debonair smile

he pointed at a strange object
all yellow and shiny
Yes laughed the Octopus
we all lkve in a Yellow Submarine
Yellow Submarine? Grace asked
Yes answered Ajay, in a Yellow Submarine!

They entered the Yellow Submarine
and Mrs Octopus welcomed them
to crumpets and tea

poet Anonymous

Well, ajay and Grace
went in and sat down
at a nice wooden table,
all shiny and brown.

'Would you like some tea?'
Mrs Octopus said.
'Yes, please,' said Grace,
with a nod of her head.

'And would you have a slice
of some nice jam and toast?'
'Oh, yes!
said ajay,
'I love that the most.'

Well, in next to no time
ajay and Grace
in that Submarine Yellow
were stuffing their face

with all sorts of things
both savoury and sweet –
it was ever so long
since they'd had such a treat! –

and the Octopus couple,
full of Octopus charms,
kept the food coming,
with sixteen arms.

Then after she'd munched
for a very long while,
Grace said, 'I'm stuffed!'
and sat back with a smile.

'Me too,' said ajay,
'I'm really replete.
Me tummy's so fat,
it's obscuring me feet.

Thanks, Octopus Couple,
for providing this scoff,
but it's now time for Gracie
and me to be off,

back to the surface
and into our boat,
away to our next
adventure we'll float.'

'Thank you for coming,'

Mrs Octopus said,
'It makes us feel good
to see you well fed.

My husband will take you
back up to your ship,
then off to your next
adventure you'll zip.'

And in next to no time
ajay and Grace
were back in their boat
on the ocean's surface.

ajay proceeded
to haul up the anchor,
unfasten the foresail
and untie the spanker.

'Where next, Grace,
shall we ride and roister?
Give me directions!
The world is our oyster!'

Let's go nearer to shore
to visit the oysters, Grace said
I'd like to buy a pearl
if they'd sell it to me

the walrus ate them all, Ajay said
leaving nothing for the carpenter
they didn't talk about cabbages and kings
or any of the silly things

ah, said Grace, maybe we'll find
the strings
that the Walrus want to talk about
but I wonder where's Alice
Is she still having  tea with Mad Hatter, I wonder

Alice, who's Alice ? asked Ajay
is she the one who lived next door
and moved away after I met her
Is she the Alice you're talking about?

Grace was surprised that Ajay lived next door to Alice
All the girls loved Alice, Ajay said
none liked Sandra

Grace watched as Ajay steered the boat
towards the distant shore

poet Anonymous

As soon as he heard
Grace give the command,
ajay set sail
for that foreign land,

where lived the Walrus
and his Carpenter mate,
who'd eaten the Oysters
at an earlier date.

'Tally ho! Gracie!
ajay he cried,
as their ship sped along
on the smoothest of rides,

'If we have to sail
to the end of the world,
we'll get you the biggest
and bestest of pearls!'

Gracie was pleased
to hear ajay say this
and she wrapped her arms round him
and gave him a kiss.

All through that day
their ship sped along
and the following wind
blew fresh and strong,

but though they could see
their far destination
they found that indeed,
to their great consternation,

as toward it they sailed
all through the day,
where they were sailing
got further away!

'What's going on here?'
ajay he said.
Grace didn't know either
and shook her fair head.

'Though we're sailing towards it –
that couldn't be clearer –
the land where we're going
is coming no nearer!'

And now might have ended
this nautical tale
if alongside their boat
had not come a Whale.

'Hello, you two,'
said the Whale, with a grin,
swishing his tail
and flipping a fin.

'This is something
you must understand:
the land where you're going
is Looking-Glass Land.

If you want to arrive
by the end of the day
you have to turn round
and sail further away!

Everything there
works backwards, you see,
so turn about now
and head out to sea.'

Then having said this,
without further ado,
the Whale disappeared
back into the blue.

'Well, fancy that!'
said ajay to Grace,
smiling broadly
all over his face,

'If we want to get there,
at sometime today,
we have to turn round
and sail further away!'

So wheeling about,
in five minutes or more,
sailing out from the land
they arrived on its shore!

They hid the boat well,
sat down on the beach
and worked out a plan
while eating a peach.

'Now remember, Gracie,'
ajay he said,
'that all of those poor
little Oysters are dead.

The Walrus and Carpenter
aren't very nice,
and about eating us
they wouldn't think twice!

If we want to get you
a shiny white pearl,
we'll both have to be
so very careful.

We must be on guard,
'cos that is the deal
and we don't want to end up
as those two's next meal.

And by the way,
who is this Alice woman you mentioned?'
