Let’s see if we can keep this going throughout 2024 and by the end have a complete poem, however long. Each entry you make can be as long or short as you wish. It can be a single full stop, an emoji, a few lines of verse, or a full blown sonnet cycle. It can be prose, if you want, or a photograph you’ve taken. Just keep it going. I’ll start:

The day began with icy roads,
and squatting on each soul
the January toads.

Mr Karswell groaned
and rolled over in his rumpled bed,
his January days of Work
stretching miserably ahead

Just another morning
But should it be!
Why not make it different?
Than usual drag for me

'That's right!' he cried,
'Why should I be a sorry slave to Toad?'
and leaping out of bed
he ran naked down the road.

It was icy and frigid cold
The move was brave and astoundingly bold
Alas the sweet desire to break free
Mortality reeled him back to warm bed to glee

The work mind took over again
The sorry self-painted its decree
But one thing new materialized
He took his first step to break the ice

'Do you come here often?' he said,
to the beautiful woman
who'd materialised
next to him in bed.

'Actually, I do,'
the beautiful woman replied,
and wrapping her arms around his chest
she snuggled in to his side.

And he realized at that moment
What is more beautiful in life
A warm embrace and touch
From his loving wife

Work may be mundane
Life outside may suck in January
But surrounded by his love ones
His home is his abode his sanctuary

I am not sure whether to laugh or cry from these verses.

it's wonderful how he can smile
through his tears, he thought
why does the smell of chestnuts
makes him think of carefree days
when he didn't need the wheelchair
to move around

'Ah! Chestnuts,' he sighed,
remembering the carefree days
when he was wont to roast his nuts
in front of a roaring fire.
'Munching chestnuts
is something of which I shall never tire.
Nurse! Nurse!
Fetch me my chestnuts
and play me a song on your lyre!'

she smiled as she looked down
at the man who gazed at her lovingly
he extended his hands and held hers
'oh Evelyn, my love my life
what took you so long
to come for me...'
when he looked again he sighed
It was Nurse Clara
weeping silently for his pain

'Weep not, Nurse Clara!
Weep not for me!
For now I've my chestnuts
I am pain free.'

He went to sleep
dreaming of dear Evelyn
He loved her so much
yet where is she now, he thought
as he walked the streets of his childhood
in his dreams. .

As he went to sleep
in his lonely bed
with dreams of Evelyn
filling his head,
little he knew
that she was dead.

How did she die?
Well, fancy that!
A steamroller
had squashed her flat,
and never Evelyn
was coming back.

So sad 😥

The sadness of never knowing
why it happened like that
the pain of living in shadows
of forgetfulness
there will be time
when he couldn't remember anything anymore
even Evelyn's face
