Fatty
Sometimes she sits on my padfolio
as I am in mid verse composure...
out on the back patio.
But a girl squirrel can't resist my nuts
and I can't say no to anything
that had half of her tail fur torn off.
I call her Fatty but it's mostly tit.
Maybe even a half dozen tits...or more...
I lost count after six.
So I figure she's a single mom,
if that's not too crass a thing to say,
and sometimes she makes off
with one of those extra long peanuts.
You know.
The ones with three instead of...

Mortem Immaturus in Maio: A Scene of Putrescence, Grief, and Rain
The grime-coated walls of a cement-made bodega house a family of two; her mother cries out beside her, howling, a grief-stricken tune—it is a dog-eat-dog world after all. Four walls echo silence and few.
The buzz of an old lightbulb— swarmed by a myriad of flying termites, the quiet whine of my panicked and labored breath, the heaving and puffing of a mother dog.
The skies cry out above us: its tears soaking the unclipped growth—that surrounds concrete foundations. A reek astir, odor of: wet loam, mold, fungi, and wood encapsulates us in a bubble, suffocating, with a...

Feral Furphy
In the scientific realm
of impossibilities,
2 sides of the coin
exists for this thought …
I wonder if animals, pets
formulate opinions
As sentient beings,
they definitely have
likes and dislikes
a wide range of feelings
some, even
complex emotions
But what would it take
for them to have
an opinion!
For humans,
most of our tastes
are stuck in our
mouths

Beware Of The Mink
If you want a mink as a pet
You will end up with regret
Unless you get one when it is small
Adult ones can't be domesticated at all
They are aggressive predators of sorts
Never thinking twice before they bite
They'll strike and sometimes even maul
They don't make a safe pet at all

Mata Furry
On a Spring day,
five years ago,
I heard a loud knocking at my front door.
Approaching to answer,
I heard a faint scratching.
First checking the peep hole,
I saw not a soul.
Then the bell rang.
Carefully, with trepidation,
I opened to see
a pure white bunny staring up at me.
Irresistibly adorable I let the little guy in.
Barely crossing our threshold,
the creature hopped
to our den
as if on a mission.
I said, “well aren't you bold” and...

A Close Encounter
My uncle, for my birthday, takes me to the local zoo.
I want to see the tigers and the baby kangaroo!
There's loads of stuff to do here; which mammal to see first?
I'm so very excited that I feel like I might burst!
First, a very handsome camel is majestic yet aloof;
then some cheerful dolphins splash me; glad I have my waterproof!
Ten orangutans are playing on some rope that has been strung;
we sit and watch an emu, tending to her precious young.
We see a gorgeous possum, in impressive form;
then cool down in the reptile house, because...

Surprise guests
Are you coming to my party? It's going to be so great!
Just walk on in, or run, or catch a lift with someone's mate.
Two friends are at the station - bravo, let's go and pick them up;
we'll bring them to the party and then let them choose a cup.
There's a flag out in the garden so you know where it will be;
There'll be such fun that you won't want to stop, I guarantee!
I'll put on games and serve great food for sure, but first a guess:
who's here as guest of honour and is going to address
the reason for this gathering, so joyous...

The Mouse
Midnight: I lie on the bed, a
song plays in my head- but which?
Ah, I don’t know. I close my eyes,
but no use: no oblivion, no
peace. No medicine of all
times. And so I get up and leave
my room. A coffee! Why
not? Therefore I go to a shelf and
grab the coffee, but I hear something.
What’s there? I look around and see
a mouse, a molecule hurrying
to escape in the infinity of the planet,
in the sea of the night. I feel
ready finally for sleep,
for the dreams remaining to me.

Manumission, sort of
16/30
Manumission, sort of
I scooped her up
gently carried her
to the other side
of the road
I know better than
to touch or
bother wildlife
but the cars
speeding past my
parked location
Damn! Moving too
fast – no way
would they see her
in time to swerve
to stop
My good deed for the day
going unnoticed
maybe even
unappreciated
I still managed a
smile as I took a
moment or ten
watching that
Desert Tortoise
slowly...

Savior Dog
She cocks her head and stares,
offers a paw in the air,
The paw is a word, the stare
a question, when the liquor
is drunk unchilled, they will stare
In the coldness of covid,
the paws comforted, rescued
our souls, the whip of the tail
delighted, their noses keen
to the smell of woes and worries
she flops down beside me, her
bottom up, and demands the rub,
near and nudging, she stares when
I stop, we healed when we stroked
petted bathed nuzzled fed
